The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa Welcomes Spring
~ New Achievements, New Executive Chef and New Refurbishments Highlight Upcoming Season ~

With the northern hemisphere preparing for autumn, Cape Town’s Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa is concluding its winter season and anticipating the bloom of spring. Glistening snowcaps remain on Table Mountain, but sunny spells and stunning countryside flower displays make this an idyllic time of year to visit the game reserves and green valleys of the Western Cape.In his recent newsletter, Horst Frehse, General Manager of The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, writes: “September is the month when South Africa acknowledges its rich heritage. In celebration of Heritage Day on September 24th, the concierge team at The Twelve Apostles has put together theCape Town Big 5 Heritage Route for guests to experience. It has also been the time of the year for us to ‘refresh’ the hotel and its facilities for the ultimate enjoyment of our valued guests in the busy summer months ahead. Among many other public and back-of-house areas, the heated Atlantic pool – and surrounding paving – has been totally refurbished into a sparkling clear pool, reflecting the ever-brilliant blue sky.”

“On the culinary front,” continues Horst, “we are very pleased to announce the appointment of Christo Pretorius as our new Executive Chef . He has, with great enthusiasm and skill, most capably taken over his new responsibilities, continuing with the high, innovative standard of our cuisine. He is currently busy preparing an exceptional spring menu to be introduced in October.” Christo and his team recently prepared a very special Gala Dinner for the International Wine and Food Society 80th anniversary, when a Cape Town Chairman’s Dinner was held in the newly-revamped Atlantic Terrace Marquee.

“We’re equally proud to be participating in Annette Kesler’s Showcook Inter-Hotel Challenge, which promotes the development of up-and-coming young chefs and sommeliers through a series of competitions,” says Horst. “The challenge culminates in a Gala Dinner on September 26th, where the winning menu and wine selection with the young chef and sommelier will be presented. Meanwhile, our charming Head Sommelier Gregory Mutambe is revising our award-winning wine list withdelectable new vintages and varieties, including some from our sister property, the Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard and Winery. We have acquired an exclusive selection of award-winning wines from the internationally-renowned Nederburg and Cape Winemakers Guild auctions, which are now available to our distinguished wine connoisseur guests.”Gregory has also been nominated to the esteemed international SAA Wine list selection panel for a second time. His fellow panelists included Debra Meiburg (Hong Kong-based Master of Wine); renowned Ms. Yegas Naidoo (South Africa Wine Master); Ralf Anselmann (Owner/Winemaker of Weingut Anselmann in Edesheim, Germany); Colin Firth (Honorary Cape Wine Master); and Danielle Le Roux (Cape Wine Master/Winemaker), among others. Over 200 wines were tasted in the space of two days. In addition, Gregory has been invited to be on the prestigious ‘Platter’s Wine Guide 2014’ selection panel.“We are so proud of our number-one position in the 2013 Travel + Leisure Awards for the ‘World’s Best Service in Africa and the Middle East’,” says Horst. “In 2013 we were featured in the overall Top 10 in the Middle East and Africa section of the ‘500 Best Hotels of the World’ Awards, and TripAdvisor placed us in their ‘Top 100 in the World’ list. A further accolade came from an Australian travel expert panel, naming The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa as the only South African hotel in their ‘100 Best Hotels and Resorts in the World‘ for the 2013 International Traveller’s Collector’s Edition. I can assure you that we are not resting on our laurels, but are committed to continue offering our guests an exceptional and memorable hotel experience!”

Horst is also particularly proud of the hotel’s commitment to service. “On the 18th of July, we participated in the 95th birthday celebration of former South African President Nelson Mandela, or ‘Tata Madiba’ as he is affectionately known here, by giving more than the accustomed ‘67 Minutes of Community Service.’ A number of staff and management volunteers visited the Nyanga Aftercare School, one of the Amy Biehl Foundation projects in one of the low-income suburbs of Cape Town. Everyone participated, with children ranging from age four to 13 decorating a massive amount of cupcakes. The fun-filled activity had a delicious ending, with the little ones enjoying the cupcakes while the 12A team was treated to a beautiful song, dance and musical performance featuring drums and marimba.”

Twelve Apostles is also experiencing an increased demand for future accommodations thanks to thecurrent favorable exchange rates for most foreign travelers. It promises to be a brilliant season ahead.

“During August, The Red Carnation Hotel Collection’s ‘Virtuoso’-affiliated General Managers and Sales Executives took part in one of the world’s largest travel gatherings,” says Horst. “The impressive 25th Anniversary Virtuoso Travel Week takes place each year in Las Vegas. It truly is an annual ‘family reunion’ for the travel industry. 2013 marked a few new records: 4,100 attendees – the highest recorded total ever; 1,900 member advisors; 1,800 suppliers (including The Red Carnation Hotel Collection ); and 90 different countries were represented. All this resulted in a record high of an estimated 350,000 four-minute appointments, equaling 1.6 million minutes of meetings – or three years of relationship building! Indeed, it gave each of us an opportunity to present our hotels and destinations over the four-day period, highlighting our ‘Unique Selling Points’ and our new video clips. It was a great opportunity to network and promote South Africa in general, and Cape Town and The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa in particular, to our most productive North and South American markets.

“Back in Cape Town, our days are getting longer which means summer is on its way,” says Horst. “We have very attractive packages offered for all seasons and occasions. I also encourage you to join us for a relaxing spa experience, and our superb Azure dinners and sundowners on our scenicLeopard Bar terrace. Relax and watch as the Southern right whales and schools of dolphins visit us at regular intervals.”

Horst and his team are in full preparation for the coming summer season and are looking forward to welcoming you, your friends and clients back to the beautiful, uniquely located Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa.
