ALCATRAZ ISLAND IS HOME TO A NEW EXHIBIT THAT EXAMINES THE EFFECTS OF MASS INCARCERATION ON FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES

CONTACT: Molly Blaisdell – (925) 300-7252/molly@hooklineandthinker.com   (June 15, 2015)  — The National Park Service, in coordination with Community Works West recently announced a new exhibit on Alcatraz Island, entitled The Sentence Unseen, which examines the effects of mass incarceration on families and communities. The Department of Justice estimates that there are 2.7 million children with an incarcerated parent and that there are more than 17,000 in San Francisco. The site specific exhibit is curated by documentary photographer Ruth Morgan and visual artist Deanne Morizono and features an installation of compelling large format photographs, video diaries and two- and three- dimensional visual art that challenges assumptions about people behind bars. The exhibit responds to Alcatraz’s notorious history as a federal prison, for equally infamous prisoners, and explores topical issues of human rights, the effect of incarceration on families and communities and the true cost of sending someone to prison. In The Sentence Unseen, Morgan captures images that use a visual vocabulary to tell stories that would otherwise remain unheard, gaining access to places and people that are traditionally inaccessible to the public, including jails, prisons and Indian reservations. The exhibit is produced by non-profit Community Works West and is hosted by the National Park Service on Alcatraz Island from June 15 –August 1, 2015. Exhibit areas are open to the public daily from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Tickets are on...
