Switzerland – Much more than Skiing.
It was an innovative St. Moritz hotelier who attracted the first winter guests to the Alps 150 years ago, with a simple bet that turned out to be the birth of winter tourism. What has made Switzerland into the successful winter destination of today is that it offers so much more than downhill skiing. In this newsletter we share some skiing-free highlights. |

Keep yourself in the Loop!
Feeling the fresh air in your face, racing over bumps and hills through the winter landscape, and taking spectacular bends on your way down the mountain – tobogganing in Switzerland is not only a lot of fun, but also very much in vogue. Throughout the whole country you find numerous runs to meet all different kinds of adrenalin needs. For those who are in for a special kick, the Tobogganing Park Leysin built a 360 degree loop into their run. Do you have the guts to stay in the loop?

Want to see Basel upside Down?
The people of Basel describe their carnival as the “drey scheenschte Dääg” (the three most beautiful days) in the year. This year’s Basler Fasnacht starts on Monday, March 10, with the Morgenstraich at 4am and ends Thursday at 4am. In the 72 hours in between, the city is turned upside down. The city streets are filled with colorful costumes, mask and lanterns and the sound of piccolos, drums and “Guggenmusiken”. The following 362 days of the year the city prepares for the famous Basel carnival with passionate commitment and boundless creativity.

Are you a Skater?
In the Valais, the pass road between Oberwald and Hotel Rhonequelle in the Obergoms is now open to cross-country skiers who use the skating technique. So the Goms Ski Trail Network runs through 12 picturesque villages from Oberwald to Niederwald and nearly all of them are stops along the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. So you can always jump on a train and return to your starting point whenever you feel like it. With the extended “Loipenticket” which permits travel on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, the route between Oberwald and Fiesch is now also included.

New Name, same Service: Swiss Travel Pass.
In spring, Switzerland Tourism launches the Grand Tour of Switzerland – a 1000-mile route to explore the highlights of Switzerland on one single tour. You can do all of it or just parts and with almost all forms of transport: car, motor bike or train. If you chose the Grand Train Tour, get the Swiss Travel Pass, which is the new Swiss Pass. Despite the name change, it still is a all-in-one ticket to travel by train, bus, trams and boats across Switzerland – and includes many bonus benefits.
