M as in maestro and music all around
M as in Munich, M as in music, M as in metropolis. The three capital Ms have become intrinsically linked with the Bavarian capital. Munich is a city where first class soloists come from the world over to thrill audiences, where people are used to musical opulence and know how to enjoy it. Munich is also a city where music is appreciated for its content and not only as a sophisticated art form, where internationally renowned orchestras perform symphonic sounds next door to ensembles producing soulful notes.

ECM – A Cultural Archaeology. Exhibtion at Haus der Kunst (November 23, 2012 – Februar 10, 2013)
Founded in 1969 by legendary producer Manfred Eicher at a moment when the status of contemporary music was being redefined across all genres, ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) aimed to bring jazz, improvised, and written music out of the studio and into the world. Acoustically rich and transparent, ECM’s productions set new standards in sonic complexity. Eicher’s productions recorded some of the world’s most extraordinary music and brought sound to a new dimension of spatial definition that set the label apart from its peers. The exhibition is designed as a sensorial field where photographic, sonic, filmic, typographic formats and installation are intermingled. “ECM – A Cultural Archaeology” is Okwui Enwezor’s first presentation for Haus der Kunst.

Tina Turner, AC/DC, Bon Jovi and U2. The Olympic Hall has seen countless numbers of world stars and new ones come every year. Munich Chamber Orchestra: A shining beacon in German Orchestral Life
Unusually creative programming and ever greater sonic homogeneity: 60 years after it was founded, in the immediate post-war period, the Münchener Kammerorchester (MKO) is a shining beacon in German orchestral life. Under its Artistic Director, Alexander Liebreich, the ensemble has increased its subscription numbers by 40 per cent in recent years, notwithstanding its consistently challenging programmes. With a distinctive theme for each season (Light, Politics, the Alps, Architecture, Eastwards or Drama) the MKO’s programmes – inspired, exciting and often surprising – juxtapose works from the past with music from our own time.

Muffatwerk: The Venue for International Art and Culture
Muffatwerk, a former power station built in Art Nouveau style, serves as a major energy supplier for Munich to this very day – for the arts, culture and youth scene, however. The interdisciplinary program is inspired by the idea of a multicultural, future-oriented and urban contemporary culture. The audience is provided with a cutting edge agenda and plenty of space is given to the creation of synergies between the fine arts and youth culture. Consequently, Muffatwerk is setting standards for the city of Munich in the field of music culture. Right here, for the first time ever, HipHop events as well as Drum’n’ Bass club nights and ambitious DJ happenings of the electronic music scene took place on a larger scale.
