Renowned Argentine winemaker Susana Balbo has been inducted into the Decanter Hall of Fame, making history as the first Latin American woman to receive this prestigious honor. The award highlights Balbo’s transformative influence on both Argentine and international wine, cementing her status among the industry’s most celebrated figures. Originally pursuing a career in nuclear physics, Susana Balbo shifted her focus to winemaking and overcame gender barriers in a male-dominated industry to become Argentina’s first female winemaker. Known as the “Queen of Torrontés,” she played a key role in elevating Argentina’s reputation for premium wines on the global stage, particularly through her pioneering work with the Torrontés grape variety. Balbo’s influence extends beyond winemaking with the opening of SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites in 2022, a luxury boutique hotel blending wine, wellness, art, and gastronomy. Guided by the hotel’s sommelier, the tasting includes background stories of each wine’s production, paired with regional light bites. Alternatively, the wine blending workshop at Susana Balbo’s winery allows guests to craft their own custom wine, guided by onsite wine experts. Each guest leaves with a bespoke bottle, a unique keepsake from their stay.
