Bonfires & Egg Hunt: Easter in Germany

Easter in Germany is a celebration with many traditions. The bunny as a symbol for Easter was first mentioned in writings in 16th-century Germany while the first edible Easter bunnies were also produced in Germany in the early 1800s. Another great tradition is beautifully displayed by the Sorbs, a Slavic minority at home in the federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg, who skillfully hand-paint Easter eggs and offer them for sale at the Easter markets.

Haunted Germany

Annually on April 30, Walpurgis Night, Northern Germany’s Harz Mountains are haunted by witches that fly around a giant bonfire. What started as a tradition in the 18th century, is now a popular event for visitors of all ages, featuring a bonfire, a medieval market, different shows and of course plenty of witches and wizards. Word was spread about this spooky custom by the great poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who included the legend in his drama Faustus I.

Lübecker Marzipan – Sweet Northern Temptation

Lübeck has been famous for its marzipan for over 200 years and this sweet delicacy is still largely produced by hand today! Since 1806, marzipan has been produced by Niederegger and their factory can be visited to learn more and to see the permanent exhibition of life-sized figures made from this sweet almond-based delicacy. When you’ve had enough marzipan for the day, we recommend you venture out and discover Lübeck’s old town, which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
