ON FOOT HOLIDAYS ANNOUNCES NEW BASQUE PYRENEES ROUTE IN SPAIN

Self-guided walking holiday highlights the true beauty of the Basque Country

SALISBURY, Great Britain, January 7, 2019 – Perched on the northern Atlantic coast near the border of France, the Basque Country isn’t like the rest of Spain. The fabled region has its own language, culinary traditions and a distinctive geographic and cultural landscape. With 32 self-guided inn-to-inn walking routes throughout 12 countries in Europe, UK-based travel specialist On Foot Holidays lets travelers discover unspoiled Europe at their own walking pace.  On Foot Holidays just announced their newest route for 2019 called “Basque Pyrenees”, a picturesque journey through the well-kept villages of Spain’s western Pyrenees, the true center of Basque culture.

The Basque Pyrenees is the eighth walk On Foot Holidays has created in Spain and they have put together a special route that visits some of the highlights of the area. Walkers will be immersed in the Basque culture, language and architecture, especially in the rural villages in the region. The walk runs along the border of France for part of the route, and actually crosses over into France for part of a day. Travelers will see plenty of wildlife including the hardy semi-wild ponies called ‘pottoka’. The landscape along the route is varied with unspoiled farm country and woodland, plus wild high ridges with great views into both France and Spain and more adventurous walkers can climb Mount Alba if desired. The last day of the route runs along a ridge on the coast to San Sebastian, featuring coastal towns tucked into sheltered inlets and bays. Named the European City of Culture in 2016, San Sebastian is the ultimate arrival point with a sandy bay, plenty of culture and great food.

Beginning in Ziga, a small village with stunning views of the Baztan valley, the route explores beautiful farmland and woodland, as well as climbing Mount Alba. Walking northwest, travelers pop over the border into France briefly before reaching the sea and taking a small boat across the water to Hondarribia, a town with an incomparable old walled center. For adventurists, take a spectacular ridge walk along the coast to San Sebastian, laid out around two sandy bays below our cliff-top approach. San Sebastian is well worth a visit, making a triumphant finale to the holiday with great rewards. Walkers stay in some beautiful restored Basque village houses and have the option to upgrade to grander options for more luxury. On Foot Holidays recommends adding extra nights in San Sebastian.

The new Basque Pyrenees walking route is now available for bookings from late April to June or September to October in 2019.  The route is an 8-night holiday, with 7-, 6- and 5-night options. Rates start from £920 per person based on double occupancy, including 8 nights, 7 breakfasts and 5 evening meals, all luggage transfers, route notes and information pack. The 7-night holiday starts at £860 per person, the 6-night holiday starts at £785 per person and the 5-night holiday starts at £710 person. Flights and airport transfers are not included. Full days consist of approximately 8 to 15 miles per day (4 ½ – 6 ½ hours) with a hard walking grade. On Foot Holidays has built-in shortening options for those who would like to walk the route at a more leisurely pace.
