Can you feel it?

The nights become longer, the days colder, and you have to dig out scarves, gloves and candles from their hiding place. Get Your Christmas Market Fix.

Christmas is around the corner. In Switzerland, Christmas markets are as much a part of the holiday tradition as chocolates, cookie baking, and family gatherings. They vary in scope from the month-long markets in Montreux to weekend events in villages like Einsiedeln or Stein am Rhein. Yet all share the basics: Christmas ornaments, gifts, local specialties, plenty of traditional Swiss atmosphere, and snow.

Meet Swiss New Year’s Spirits.

On New Year’s Eve and on January 13 (“Old New Year’s Eve”), strange things are going on in the Appenzell region – at least for out-of-towners. Men dressed up as beautiful, ugly and beautifully ugly “Chläuse” make their way around the local farms. Upon reaching a farm, they form a circle, ring their bells in time with each other and perform a wordless yodel (a “Zäuerli”). They wish the family a happy New Year and are rewarded with money before moving on to the next farm.
