German Fest Spectacle in Düsseldorf, “Biggest Fun Fair on the Rhine” is Major Summer Travel Highlight
Why wait until Oktoberfest when one of Germany’s best attractions for family travel can be experienced during the warm season instead. Nearly 4 million visitors can’t be wrong: Düsseldorf’s “Biggest Fun Fair on the Rhine” is among Germany’s top outdoor festivals. The 10 days of fun for the whole family on the Rhine River offer great entertainment during the height of the summer, and the city’s tourism office, Düsseldorf Marketing & Tourism GmbH, now offers a dinner cruise for the event’s closing fireworks on July 19.
Düsseldorf, Germany – No wonder the annual Fair shows up on more and more international family travel itineraries each year. A massive German festival with the works smack in the middle of summer, Düsseldorf’s “Biggest Fun Fair on the Rhine” delivers the total fest experience during the warmest season. Set for ten days on the gorgeous fairgrounds on the Rhine River right across from the city’s center (July 12-21, 2013), the fair is the ticket to German fest heaven. Visitors will find beer tents with live music, costumed servers, and all imaginable German fest food delicacies from savory to sweet: sausage, roast, pig knuckles to potatoes and sauerkraut to apple cake and ginger bread and much more. For kids of all ages, there are state-of-the-art rides (some of the world’s biggest temporary rides in the world are featured here) and all kinds of family entertainment options, including a dinner cruise to enjoy the huge fireworks on July 19th from a prime seat on the water.
This summer fair has been a summer party staple for the locals for more than a century. The festival began 500 years ago as a local club celebration, and its main feature, the outdoor fair, is now in its 112th year. The event’s popularity is growing so much it was extended from 9 to 10 days in 2012.
The new format continues in 2013 as the event keeps growing by leaps and bounds – as does tourism to the city. Düsseldorf broke the 4 million mark in overnight stays for the first time in 2012, testimony to the fact that the city, which is Number 6 on a list of global cities in quality of life, is fast becoming a must-see stop for many Germany travelers.
Getting to the fair from Düsseldorf’s center — the historic Old Town and home to the “Longest Bar in the World” (260 bars, pubs and restaurants in under a square mile) — is half the fun: a ferry takes revelers from one side of the Rhine River to the other and drops them off right at the fair.
This year, the fair offers another option for a trip on the Rhine: a Rhine River cruise during the closing fireworks on July 19th on the “MS Riverstar,” at €75 per person. The cruise, which starts at 7:00 pm and ends at 11:30 pm, includes a dinner buffet, music, and perfect firework viewing from the boat’s open-air deck.
