The reopening of the Kunstkammer Wien is Europe’s most important new museum presentation. From March 2013, the Kunsthistorisches Museum will be showcasing this unique Habsburg collection on over 2700 m².At the time when the Middle Ages became modern times, the emperors and archdukes of Habsburg began to collect all the knowledge of that time in the form of magnificent works of art. They combined nature and art, advances in technology and science, precious and rare objects in their art treasuries as symbols of their power and expressions of their personal preferences, and eventually these items became the origins of our museum.

The Habsburgs’ passion for collecting, which continued for centuries, resulted in a cosmos of art and beauty that will be resurrected in the Kunstkammer Wien in 2013, with 2200 works of art telling the numerous stories of their creators, collectors and the rulers from bygone eras.

Goldsmith works, sculptural masterpieces, masterful bronze statuettes, filigree and bizarre works in ivory, expertly crafted stone vessels, valuable timepieces and complicated automata by the best and most famous artists of the day – each item unique in the world – have been enchanting observers for centuries, and will do the same to you.

Don’t miss the Kunstkammer Wien, the cultural highlight – opening again in 2013!
