Schubert’s “Winterreise”
Matthias Goerne & Christoph Eschenbach
Sense

February 16, 2014
A man loses his way, wonders off, flees. Love’s sorrows really did move something, in the truest sense of the word. Schubert’s “Winterreise” also moves the audience. There is barely a performance that does not move the audience to tears. Matthias Goerne, a student of Dietrich Fischer-Diskau and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, produced a legendary recording of the work together with Alfred Brendel. Since Brendel retired, Christoph Eschenbach has accompanied Goerne; after all, this music can only be performed by true greats.
