April 18, 2013

Yesterday, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans Aviation Board announced plans to build a brand new, state-of-the-art airport on the north side of the current airport property. The project budget is estimated at $826 million and construction is expected to commence in 2014, with completion in 2018 for the 300th anniversary of the City of New Orleans.

The world class airport will be a game-changer for New Orleans’ status as a convention, leisure, special event and business destination. The economic model of the new facility will allow the airlines to bring in more daily flights to grow exhibitor and attendee levels and facilitate better service for all of your participants and their schedules.

Recently, significant progress has been made to improve the air service, facilities and customer experience at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International. These significant modernizations will continue to serve you well in the short-term. The new construction will not impact the existing terminal or the new services and features in which we invested or be distracting in any way for your meetings.

The new airport provides New Orleans the ability to build dramatically on these recent acclaimed improvements and will create a world-class airport that this city and you deserve. The $300 million in improvements unveiled earlier this year will be utilized over the next five years and then used in repurposing of the existing terminal.

There has been great coverage of this exciting announcement and we will keep you informed of the progress over time. Please click here for the story on the Times Picayune’s nola.com which provides maps and artist renderings of the layout of the new airport.

This new airport, along with the recent opening of the Great Hall at the Morial Convention Center, our work on the Tricentennial re-engineering of the riverfront, exponentially more restaurant and entertainment venues than ever before, the expansion of the National World War II Museum, new street car lines and so much more are further evidence that Great Meetings Happen Here!
